7 Questions With Son Of Saturn

What compelled you to start RMR?

I've been using the name for about 4 years now, initially it was just an independent label I used to release my own projects. About a year and a half ago, Morbski and I decided to launch RMR as an actual independent label, an artist collective that would provide a centralized forum for supporters to find message based music. RMR was also started to pull together the resources of all the artists involved, we all help each other and we all build together, constantly pushing on another to keep moving forward and taking our music to the next level.

Most artists have a vivid moment that changed their life and led them on their artistic journey, was it like that for you? Can you share your memory?

I've always been an artistic person. I can't really recall a specific memory that sparked anything. I was a graffiti artist before I was an emcee. A homie from an old graff crew in 96' was always spitting rhymes while we were painting, one day I just started rhyming with him....

I've listened to you develop your music over the years, alot has changed. What inspired you to go in the direction you have?

In the beginning I was mostly just freestyling with my brother Metacaum back in 97', we always had a very political undertone in our music when we started actually recording and performing. After a while my music took on more battle content, and I focused mainly on complex rhyme schemes and quick intricate delivery... but my studies have always influenced my subject matter, and as I got older I realized how important our voices are. I dropped two albums, "A Real Slap In The Face" & "Singlespeak Oddities." Looking back, both of these albums show an almost gradual transformation into what my music is now. There were joints about politics, and conspiracy, but there were also zombie songs, songs about my struggles in life, and joints just about flexing lyrical prowess. When I started production on "The Madness & The Mahakaruna" and the first Akashik Ancestorz EP, I decided to focus my efforts on political, metaphysical, and spiritual concepts. I needed to make these songs for myself, and I felt like others wanted to hear about some of the information I was uncovering in my research.

Your spirituality is a big part of your music and RMR, how did you find such a strong sense of moral and spiritual guidance?

I read a lot of books, did a lot of meditation and reflection, quit all drugs and alcohol for three and a half years, I was introduced to kundalini yoga, and chanting. For years I was like a sponge, I was always reading books on Buddhism, Sikhism, Sufism, Hermeticism, Krishna Consciousness, The Cabala, Gnosticism etc... At some point my research changed from purely theoretical into something applied with daily practice. The most important thing I learned, is that no matter how many books I read, the real guidance always came from something intrinsic within me, that was God.

Who are your influences, musical, artistic , spiritual or political and why?

Musical/Artistic: All my RMR brothers. Honestly I rarely even listen to hiphop anymore unless its people from our camp, or people we work with. But I will always love Freestyle Fellowship, Heiroglyphics, The Pharcyde, too much New York 90's boom bap to mention. Recently I've been listening to Morbski, Twin Perils, Verbal Godz, Se7en Sandman, Bloody Monk Consortium, etc... My real love is reggae, I can't get enough. Art-wise I love Mear One, I have a lot of Doze Green's work tattoed on me, Mike Giant, Jean Michel Basquiat, really anyone who incorporates politics, occult/spiritual symbolism and knowledge into gritty urban artwork.. oh well, can't forget king Banksy! I'm also an admirer of Renaissance painters, there is so much mystery in every piece, it's no surprise most of the artists were initiates.

Spiritual/Political:

So many to mention here, so I will just name a few who really stick out to me. Pramahansa Yogananda, Radhanath Swami, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Manly P. Hall, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhubada, Osho, Adyashanti, Thich Nhat Hanh, Abbie Hoffman, Huey P. Newton, Bill Cooper, Michael Tsarion, Jim Marrs.... This list could go on forever...

Whats one thing someone could never guess about you?

I was raised by spider monkeys.

This blog is for your supporters, what is your message to them?

Thank you. You are primary reason we do this. Hip Hop is the catalyst for change in our world, we as a culture have the potential to make a significant difference for ourselves, for the youth, and for future generations. We have to continue to support each other, and stand up and make our voices heard in every country on every continent on this planet. What other force is there, that is world wide, deeply rooted and resonating in the minds and hearts of millions from New York to New Zealand? It's Hip Hop, we are the voice of the voiceless, we have the ability to reach countless people with our words. Let's choose them wisely, and boycott all this garbage pop rap masquerading as Hip Hop. Keep showing support, keep doing the knowledge and passing it to a friend. Each One Teach One.

Peace & Blessings.
